Accessibility

We want everyone to be able to look at a home on a VEI Sites page, whether you use a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader, or a phone held in one hand. Here's what we aim for and where we still fall short.

What we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. That means things like text you can read against its background, buttons and forms you can use with only a keyboard, photos with descriptions, and pages that work on a small screen. We're not claiming every page meets every rule. It's the goal we build to.

What we test with

• Lighthouse accessibility scores on the phone version of the VEI Sites page and every listing site, with 90 or higher as the bar before anything goes live.
• Screenshots at six screen sizes, from a small phone to a large monitor, to catch text that gets cut off or a page that scrolls sideways.
• Using the buttons, forms, photo gallery, and floor plan viewer with a keyboard.
• Color contrast checks against the WCAG AA ratios.
• Written descriptions (alt text) for every photo, describing the room.

Known limits

• 3D tours come from other services, like Matterport, Zillow 3D Home, iGUIDE, Kuula, and CloudPano. We choose which tour to show, but we don't control how it works with a keyboard or a screen reader.
• Videos play from YouTube or Vimeo. Captions depend on the video and its host, and not every listing video has them.
• Floor plans are pictures. The viewer lets you zoom and drag, and each plan has a text label for its floor, but the drawing itself can't be read aloud.
• The map is an image with a text description. The address is written out next to it, with a link to directions in Google Maps.
